Wood Siding Houston TX: Fixing Rot and Matching Boards

Wood siding lasts when water can't sit on it. We replace rotted boards, rebuild trim around windows and doors, and match old lap, bevel and drop profiles so a repair doesn't stand out.

Most of the rot we find starts low on the wall, behind overflowing gutters, or at window sills where the paint has failed. We probe every board in those areas, not just the ones that look bad.

Done with painting? If your home isn't in a historic district, ask about switching to vinyl siding in Houston.

Hidden damage

Rot and Termites Behind the Boards

Termites are a real risk here. Texas A&M AgriLife reports that Formosan termites were first found in Texas in 1956 near the Houston Ship Channel, and that they can damage more wood, faster, than native termites.

When we pull boards and find mud tubes or hollowed-out wood, we stop and show you. The colony needs treating by a pest professional before new wood goes on, or the new boards are next.

Historic districts

Historic District Rules

Homes in the Houston Heights historic districts need a Certificate of Appropriateness from the City before exterior changes. The design guidelines list horizontal lapped, bevel and drop wood siding as compatible, and vertical siding and flat panels as not.

There's an upside: the guidelines say replacing non-original cladding, like aluminum, with wood can be approved administratively. If your house was covered over decades ago, getting back to wood may be simpler than you expect.

Hard-to-find profiles cost more, since boards may need to be milled to match.

Matching

How We Match an Old Profile

We take a sample board, measure its exposure and thickness, and compare it to stocked profiles. When nothing stocked matches, a millwork shop can run boards to the same shape. New boards go in with the same overlap as the old ones, so water sheds the same way.

Owner questions

Questions From Owners of Older Homes

Should I repair my wood siding or switch to vinyl?

Repair it if the rot is limited and you like the look or live in a historic district. Switch to vinyl if rot is widespread and you're done painting.

Can vinyl go on a house in a historic district?

The Heights design guidelines list wood siding as compatible and don't list vinyl, so plan on wood there and check with the City first.

How do I know if termites are in my siding?

Look for mud tubes on the foundation, boards that sound hollow, and winged insects near windows or lights. Any of those is worth a pest inspection.

Can you match boards on a very old house?

Often. If no stocked profile matches, a millwork shop can make boards to the same shape.

Is cedar better than pine for replacement boards?

Cedar naturally resists rot and insects better than untreated pine, so it's usually the better choice for boards near the ground or in damp spots.

Do you work in Houston?

Yes. Call (832) 924-6020 and tell us where the soft boards are.
